Liposuction (body & facial) Surgery

The pressure on people to look good and have a great body is increasing making liposuction the most common aesthetic procedure performed worldwide and in India as well. This has also happened due to increased peer pressure, changing lifestyles, expected outcomes and the increased safety associated with these procedures.

Fat accumulation happens due to an unbridled life style, dietary indiscretion or both. Women who have gone through childbirth also find themselves in such a situation due to difficulty in losing weight and having stretch marks and loose skin in addition.

The most important thing for the permanency of the results is a change in lifestyle so as to have a calorie restricted diet and increased activity so that the number of calories consumed are always less than those consumed. Liposuction is not indicted for weight loss but as all tissues the removed fat has weight too and hence it does cause a significant weight loss in the long run.

Certain fat deposits are very resistant as compared to others. This is especially so in designated fat stores – abdomen, hips and thighs for a woman (pear shape) while for a man it is chest and abdomen (apple). Even if one loses weight, the body proportion may not change significantly in these areas and the bulges continue to be bothersome. Liposuction permanently removes fat cells from these areas and the body is sculpted back into shape.

Liposuction techniques
Suction Assisted Lipectomy (SAL) - traditional and time tested which has been used all over the world with consistent results. Decades of studies are available on eth impeccable safety record of this procedure. Finer cannulas and better techniques have resulted in vastly improved results. SAL is now the gold standard in liposuction techniques.
Ultrasound/Laser/Infra red waves Assisted Lipectomy (UAL) - utilizes external energy to break the fat cells before suctioning them out. Advantages include decreased effort for the surgeon and probably less amount of blood loss. However, increased chances of fluid collection and skin damage exist. Long term safety record is unavailable as these techniques have been advocated in the market for only few years. More chances of having a complication as compared to SAL.

THE RESULT OF LIPOSUCTION DOES NOT DEPEND ON THE GADGET USED FOR THE LIPOSUCTION RATHER DEPENDS ON THE SURGEON HOLDING AND USING IT.

Liposuction procedure

Liposuction is usually done at our center with a combination of general and tumescent anaesthesia. The advantage is general anesthesia is safe and increases patients as well as the surgeon's comfort during circumferential one stage body contouring, while the tumescent fluid makes it blood less. It helps us achieve full definition in 3 dimensions.

Tiny incisions (2-3 mm) are made as access points in the natural creases or within bikini line through which the wetting solution is infiltrated. The fat is then aspirated using finecannulas and with smooth controlled action. The commonly treated areas are – abdomen, hips, thighs, love handles, saddle bags, inner thighs, buttocks, upper and lower back and the arms. The under chin area and the jaw line are commonly addressed on the face. The amount of fat removed will depend on the number of areas addressed and the quantity of fat deposited in the areas. Usually 3-15 liters of fat can be removed in well selected cases. The quantity of fat removed and the medical condition of the patient decides if eth surgery can be done as a day care or a hospital based procedure.

Post surgery

A custom made pressure garment/corset (made of Lycra and cotton) will be put on immediately after the surgery. The garment is to be worn for 4 weeks after surgery, usually 24 hours a day. The corset is not to be removed for the first 5 days. After this period the only time it has to be removed is for a shower.

Post surgery sequels include swelling, bruising and discomfort. These are temporary and should disappear over a few weeks. People are mobile the same day and no bed rest is advised. You can return to work in 3-4 days and can start heavy physical activity in 4 weeks.

Complications are unusual following liposuction done safely in experienced and well trained hands. Seroma, pigmentation, minor irregularities, temporary loss of sensation, blood clots and skin ulcerations have been reported. Major complications like fluid overload, embolism and shock due to organ injury are very rare when safety regulations are adhered to.
